Untitled Dream - Kinetic Sculpture (2008) |
Adolescent memories related to making and tinkering have always elicited feelings of enjoyment and fulfillment for me. There is something profoundly satisfying about the act of creation during those early years—finding objects, experimenting with materials, and bringing ideas to life through hands-on engagement. This sense of exploration and creativity is a fundamental part of childhood and adolescence, fostering a connection to the physical world and the joy of making.
My collaborating artist, Mike Burdman, and I drew from this wellspring of emotional connection to our youthful memories as we embarked on the creation of Untitled Dream. We allowed ourselves to be guided by the feelings of excitement and curiosity that characterized our younger selves. Just as we did in our adolescence, we sought out found objects—everyday items that, when combined with imagination and ingenuity, could be transformed into something extraordinary.
The result of this process is a kinetic sculpture that stimulates awe and wonder. Untitled Dream is a testament to the power of creativity and the enduring impact of those formative years. The sculpture is designed to engage viewers on multiple levels, inviting them to get close and explore its intricacies. As they interact with the piece, they can listen to the unique sounds it produces and anticipate the movements and changes that will occur next.
The experience of engaging with Untitled Dream is intended to evoke the same sense of discovery and delight that we felt as adolescents. It is a call to reconnect with the joy of making and the simple pleasures of hands-on creativity. By inviting viewers to explore the sculpture up close, we hope to spark their curiosity and imagination, encouraging them to see the beauty and potential in the objects and materials that surround them.
Through this work, we aim to celebrate the enduring spirit of youthful creativity and the emotional resonance of our adolescent memories. Untitled Dream is not just a sculpture; it is an invitation to remember, explore, and create, bridging the past and the present in a continuous journey of wonder and discovery.
